Language
The official language is Spanish but English and French are widely spoken. Learn some basic Spanish before you go, Cubans will be happy if you try to speak a little of their language. Remember: Cuban dialect and slang differs greatly from Mexican Spanish.

Currency
The Cuban peso is the official currency. Each peso is equivalent to 100 cents. There are 1,3,5,10 and 20 peso bills and 1,5 and 20 cent coins and 1 and 3 peso coins. However, US dollars are accepted as payment everywhere in Cuba. US credit cards and travelers checks are NOT accepted.

Weather
Cuba has an average of 330 sunny days a year with an average summer tempiture of 25 celsius (77 feharenheit) and an avarage winter temperature of 22 celsius (72 fahrenheit). The rainy season is from May - October and the dry season is from November - April.

Time Zone
Cuba is in the Eastern Standard Time Zone (-5 GMT). It also will change to Eastern Daylight Saving Time from May to October.

Electricity
The electric current in general use is 110 volts/60 cycles, Many of the newer hotels also have 220 voltage. If you plan to bring electrical appliances with round prongs, also bring a flat-prong adapter. The electric outlets in Cuba will take flat prongs only.

Water

Water in Cuba is purified in the main tourist areas and bottled water is readily available. We suggest you only drink bottled water to be safe.

Medical
If you require medical attention, good care is available for tourists. Cuba has more doctors per capita than any other Latin country. Medical insurance is available. No vaccinations are necessary for travel to Cuba.

Crime
Violent crime is rare in Cuba. Cuba has very strict laws and severe penalties for breaking those laws. There are no guns and no drugs. There are many Policemen on the streets of Havana and they are very helpful.

Getting Around
There are no travel restrictions for foreigners. While you are in Havana, Car rentals, taxis and buses are available. Airline flights within the country are very inexpensive.
